Just something I've read on facebook the other day, and I wanted to check with the guys on here if someone heard anything about this.
Apperantly there would be a difference in formulation between DOT3 and DOT4 fluids wich would cause our caliper seals to leak more easily.
I can't really think of anything as afaik borate esther is the component that gives dot 4 a higher boiling point.
Nevertheless, it's always good to ask on here just in case.
There are aluminum Wilwood D-8 calipers on the 6t8 about 9 years now and have always had Wilwood DOT 4 brake fluid in them. There are no brake fluid leaks. The brakes are always getting bleed to keep the fluid fresh. T
I have a stock MC and wilwood calipers. Never had a good pedal (mushy) with DOT4. Switched to DOT3 and the pedal is perfect. I don't have any explanation for this.
I would suspect that the brake bleeding process was more effective when you went back to DOT 3. If DOT 4 fluid had caused any damage to your system, changing back to DOT 3 would not have resolved it.
I use DOT 5. Never had a problem with it and it's been on DOT 5 since I bought my car. Strong pedal (non-power) and I don't have to worry about my fluid attracting water since DOT 5 is hydrophobic. This will help if you store your car for any long period of time.
