So this has happened to me a couple times already. My car has died entirely on me while I was driving it. No power, nothing. I used to think it was the distributor overheating but this happened at night while the engine was cold.
Ive taken a voltmeter and I have a fully charged battery at 12.9 volts and I got the same reading st the alternator.
The interior lights don’t work, nor do any of the electronics.
When this happened before, I let it sit for 30 minutes and the car magically had power again and fired right up. Does anybody have any solutions?
I would check connections from alternator to ground and battery to ground.Once running alternator should keep running even if battery is dead. 12 volts to coil and ground. Also ignition switch could be problem.
You really need a wiring schematic. (If you pm me with email I will send you one as too large for forum) Just need year. You can mark the wires you need to check and next time it dies you can go thru them pretty quick and hopefully find your trouble. If alternator and wires good and power at coil then only ignition switch and ground.
The fuse box gets its power from the starter battery connection. Check that wire to see if it is losing power somewhere between the starter and the fuse box.
Thanks for the help guys! I was able to find the problem. It was a frayed/loose connection to the air unit that happened to short the entire power. For some reason, I was still getting voltage in the alternator and the battery.
I have a wiring diagram so I'll go trace some lines and clean some connections up. Thanks y'all!
