Default New 1971 Project

Hey! I've had a C4 for a long time and done a good bit of work on it. This forum has been very helpful to me in getting everything working.

Now I'm starting a new project. It's my mom's 1971 auto that sat since my brother and sister were born, 27 years ago. I want to get it fixed up for her. It's at my parent's house which is a few hours away, but I'm going to try to take some time to work on it with my dad. Think it could be a great project.

Neither my dad nor I are new to mechanic work, but this will be our first time on a C3, or working on a car that has sat that long. Are there any specific things we should look out for? I'm thinking we'll start with draining/replacing fluids, changing out items like spark plugs and wires, and cleaning the carb. Anything else we should do? I'm sure it won't be that easy, but it's a place to start.

Also, I have a factory service manual for my '85 and it's been invaluable. Where can I get one for the '71?

Thank you! Looking forward to this project.

I would start by taking the spark plugs out of the motor and soak the cylinders with mystery oil and turn the motor over by hand from the crank

Any idea where I could get it digitally? I like the physical book but I intend to travel with it a lot and don’t want to lose the physical manual.

I believe Willcox also took the lead on making OCRed, searchable PDFs of the Shop Manual and Assembly Manual.

GM still holds the copyright, so you won't find these online for free.

Awesome car. BTW. I'd air up the tires, push it outside, and clean everything first. Good luck!

Wheels are locked up pretty good. Not sure what the issue there is. Probably have to jack it up to find out.

I fully expect to pay for digital just like the format better. I’ll check those places. Thank you!
