I may look like an idiot for asking this, but exactly who is this Lars person i keep hearing about and why is it such a special occasions when he goes somewhere??????????
Actually he has countless years of experience on cars and is very smart when it comes to our cars.
One example: I was rebuilding the top end of my car and I couldn't figure out a problem and like always I posted it on the forum. He gave me his phone number and told me to call him on a Sunday and he walked me through the entire process for about a half hour. That is who lars is.
Let's say Lars is the answer to some of our collective prayers.
After Lars had stopped his carb loaner/rebuild service, I sent him my carb (I wasn't aware it had stopped). Lars, being a good sport, rebuilt my carb anyway using the specs that I sent him for my car and turned it around a week later. Other than some mild richening at idle (I ended up with six turns from seated instead of the three Lars set it at), the carb works great! Even the choke behaves like it should (slowly dropping idle speed as car warms up).
I know of several others that have provided somewhat similar assistance but we definitely need more like him on this forum.
Lars Is the coolest guy on earth- He drinks beer, builds killer engines, paints cars like know one I've ever seen, is a engineer, a carb and ignition expert and one really nice guy- He walked me through my paint job for a month and always answered my questions, often within minutes! He never once let me down through the whole process and the car came out flawless, I never would have gtotten the results I did without his help, not even close! This is who Lars is to me-
Lars is one of the most helpful people on corvetteforum.com. He knows his stuff and freely shares his skills and knowledge. He used to have a carb rebuilding service for members, but I think he got overwhelmed. He was also loaning spare carburetors to members so that they could diagnose there carburetion problems. As far as I'm concerned, he went way above and beyond the call of duty for this forum. If there were more people like Lars, the world would be a much better place. Well, our cars would run better anyway :D.
I'm still waiting for him to come to Portland.
He rebuilt my carb twice before finally throwing in the towel... I've since bought a new car and rather than make him deal with my carburator deficiencies again... I bought a new carb. :D
But I used his papers and advice on: timing, tuning and how to win friends and influence vette owners daily :D;)
Being new here, I didn't know a whole lot about Lars until I heard he was coming to LA. Turns out I was the closest member to where he was staying. I offered to hold the tuning session at my house. I was blown away by Lars. It was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen. He knew every little bit about everyone's car like it was simple arithmatic. And he works for beer!!! He told me about the Carb Loaner program and offered to rebuild a carb for me. It should be coming in this week. The world really needs more people like him. :yesnod:
Lars is awesome. :yesnod:  A very upstanding helpful guy who makes the rest of us proud to be part of this corvette forum community. :seeya :chevy :flag He rebuilt my backup 69 truck carb for me with the correct corvette jets, rods etc... Stuff I just didn't have floating around here. And it ran great when I installed it with only a minor idle adjustment while my correct numbers one was in for cosmetic restoration. :smash:
LARS is an acronym for Learned Alot Regarding Spark. Well at least i did from reading his papers. :conehead
I can see how someone would think that LARS is an acronym!! the LARS carb tuning paper, the LARS distributor rebuild kit, the LARS method of setting timing for maximum performance, the LARS carb loaner program, and on and on!!!
He has been extremely generous with his knowledge and time and the forum has benefited from it.
I like that comment: ".........and he works for beer!!! "
Lars lives here in the Denver area, near me. I have met him a few times. He is an engineer working for Lockheed Martin, and I guess he has ownership in a body/paint shop as well. He is very very good at painting cars as well as carburetor tuning. I attended one of his workshops.
Lars is not your typical engineer. (Nor I hope, am I). He is very smart and is one of those people who ends up mastering anything he sets out for. Plus he is self taught in the automotive skills.
Unfortunately, he was recently in an accident with his Corvette, and since then he's been so busy with that repair that I haven't seen much of him on the forum or in any other workshops.
In his defense, it is hard to tune a carburetor remotely. I mean, from other parts of the country with unknown altitudes, humidity levels and air density.
At the last cruise in, I brought up the subject of perhaps making Lars a moderator some day. He would be excellent in Engine Mods. However, I do know he doesn't have a lot of time, and I wonder if he would actually have time to moderate.
Lars, if this is something you're interested in, talk to me.
The man had a 3 hour layover in Miami (on the way to his family vacation), and offered to do a tech/tune session. I thought my car ran fine------till Lars touched. A recurve kit, a tweak to the carb, and now I KNOW it runs fine.
He is a true class guy, and a credit to our Corvette family
Just as everyone has mentioned, Lars is a very generous guy. He is a very intelligent engineer, who has many years of experience with cars in every department, paint and body, carbs, distributors, etc. What makes him so unique is that he is willing to share his knowledge with anyone. Not very many people are willing to do that, with little in return. When his job takes him to different parts of the country he meets with fellow enthusiast and shares his knowledge and expertise with them. Can you imagine how heavenly this world would be like if everyone gave a little back to others in need.
