On my '73, the Owner's Manual says the Headlights are protected by a "Circuit Breaker". Anyone know offhand where it is? Inner Bulbs not coming on at all with the foot switch (but theBRIGHTdash light and the High Beam circuit of the Outer Bulbs work with the foot switch).
The circuit breaker is part of the (head)lights switch. It breaks the connection when overloaded (actually overheated). But it's reversibel (if it is not broken itself), so after cooling down the current flows again (which leads under some circumstances to flickering headlights).
GunPowder is right about the circuit breaker. Sounds like your issue is either with the inner bulbs being burnt out, or wiring issue after the dimmer switch.
Thanks folks.
While I was removing a header last month without disconnecting the battery ground strap, yup, I sparked something and had to replace a fuse; afterwards the circuit was restored. Can't remember which fuse it was thought, dammit.
I hadn't done any wiring mods to the headlight circuit, except R&R the Headlight Switch 4-5 years ago. Headlights/Doors worked 4.0 since.
Pretty sure this problem is related to that little short circuit I inadvertently created back then.
I will look at all the fuses again (man I hate gettin under there!) and hopefully find out the answer there.
Circuit breaker part of the Headlight Switch eh? Interesting.
THAT, is a great deal of info there my friend. Thank you very much for the time you took in writing it up for me.
I will FIRST check that connection you annotated in the box*; as soon as it stops raining. SoCal weather has sucked for a week and is probably responsible for the disasters throughout the country.
Thanks again.
Steve
* Not the Bulb connections at fault. Re-sat them all with no change in light status.
