Is the Spare Tire Tub bare fiberglass? Or painted?
1968
I removed my old beat up cracked spare tire tub today. Drilled out the rivets and started wire brushing the metal bracket in preparation for painting.
As far as the fiberglass tub -- do I just leave it raw fiberglass? Or should I paint it? I'm not purist so I'm just asking how it was sold. The old tub ooks like it's bare fiberglass to me, but it's old and beat up so who knows?
I've had this "new" tub for 30+ years but since I was under there I decided to finally swap it out... the old one REALLY looks quite beat by now..... below is a picture of the new tray where I was checking to see if the 255/60R-15s would fit (fit easily). I thought I read somewhere that at some point they went to longer bolts to hold the front of the tray??

Thanks Rescue Rogers
I like that. Is that greyish color or body color? And is your supporting bracket black?

Its actually a blue close to the body color and the metal frame is a stainless steel color. The reflection off the ground and the flash may give it a tonal shift

IMO, the least noticeable color for that tub is the original bare grey fiberglass. I painted one satin black...thinking that would look "better". But, it stuck out like a sore thumb.
Had to use stripper to remove the black paint. I did spray the [bare] tub with satin clear to protect it a bit and make it easier to clean.

Hmm... that sounds like something I can manage. I'm not the most artistic guy in the world but I should be able to spray satin clear on the tub and paint the metal for protection.

I'm using stainless hardware per the below post. I was going to use rivets but if Dub says stainless hardware is good enough, then it's good enough.
