Default New exhaust question

At present my 1978 L82 has 2 pipes straight off the manifolds that go direct to the rear silencers.
They are not linked together anywhere at all.

I used to have a Mercedes SLK55 V8 and when i fitted a new exhaust i was told it must have an "X" type balancer pipe to balance both banks out.

How important is it having the pipes linked together on my Vette?

Thanks

Norman

I never had a crossover on my L-82 exhaust when I ditched the cat and went to straight pipes and never experienced any issues. I always thought the pipe was for sound purposes but mine sounded great with the stock mufflers and headers. Of course this was before all the smog laws went into effect!

They are still linked through the intake manifold /exhaust crossover in the head.

Many of us had H or X pipes installed to equalize the banks, but more importantly kill some of the drone from louder mufflers. Personal preference, and not critical.

It also makes the engine sound like it has a milder cam than it does with true duals.

depending on firing order and pressure wave dynamics, and size of pipe, plus its restriction, it has been stated that one might get more mid range torque with a balance pipe in between. and there is some science related to where in the stream it should go.

Nosheruk,
There is no need for a "X" pipe, "H" pipe or any crossover pipe. Google: Frieburger / Dulcige dyno test on exhaust.
Those special and expensive pipes gained 4 lb of torque and actually lost H.P.

NOT money well spent.
