Idle 730 RPM advance was 18
3000 RPM was 36 degrees

Then I connected vacuum advance from the low port on the carb

I believe it is below the throttle plate and still considered manifold vacuum

I was initially at 20 IDLE
and 56 degrees at 3200 RPM

Dialed it down to 12 at IDLE
Still at 51 at 3200 RPM

Will this much advance hurt my engine?

I cannot hear pinging no dieseling etc.

93 octane gas.

Seems to run fine

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Nothing, but you did move the timing again....so start over with the vac can unplugged to get your 36 total and then just plug the vac hose back on........and you are done.
You will not be able to get an accurate reading with the can plugged in at 3000 rpm because it is not simulating light throttle/light load condition.......
Have Lars send you his timing papers and i am sure after reading it you will understand it much better.
18 degrees at idle is not unheard of for stock HEI distributor......it should be fine.

Thanks Jebby

I started over 18 at Idle 36 at 3000 all in

Then I connected the vacuum and she runs well.

No pinging or missing.

She is a little slower off the line but smoother at idle and accelerating.

I'm going to run her this way for a few days to see how she does

Thanks for all the help!

Sounds like you got it just right in the end. 36 degrees total with vacuum Disconnected and Plugged, at 3000 rpm (making sure this is all in). If you need to play with the vacuum advance, that is separate from the idle or all-in mechanical adjustment. You can swap vacuum cans, or add an adjustable can. Having some vacuum advance at idle (which you saw) is normal, and totally okay.

Now go drive your car!
