If a car cruises at 60 mph for say two hours, the efi will maintain the afr at say 14.7:1. That will give a good return on mpg. If the carb is setup with the primary jets selected to attain an afr of 14.7:1 at 60 mph for two hours, do you think there will be a difference in the mpg? Nope. The engine cylinders don't care how the air and fuel is mixed up above, they just want the mixture to be 14.7:1 to give the best mpg. The advantage of efi over carbs is that it can better adjust the afr during periods of transition during acceleration and deceleration. But at a steady speed, not a big difference between carb and efi. This is why a well tuned carb can perform nearly as well as efi. My 750 dp without a choke in summer weather will start with a quick shot of gas and run on it's own after a few seconds. But the efi would be more efficient for my cold starts and would save a bit of fuel during warm up. I do care about gas mileage but I don't expect the moon with 450+ hp, 4-speed and a 4.11 rear end.
When I did mine, I replaced all of the supply and return tubing with -6AN hose.
Be careful which hose you choose. I replaced mine with -8AN hose a few years ago. Last week there was a puddle under the car. Gas was seeping thru the walls of the hose. Old AN hose and new pump gas formulations don't mix....
You shouldn't use braided AN hose unless it's PTFE lined, the normal stuff is breathable and not should be used. I prefer black PTFE rubber hose, very easy to work with, no pressure issues or your garage smelling like gas...use that with the press fittings and you should be good to go.
That's my big issue......will you be able to get Holley Sniper parts 10-15 years from now? They already have a whole line of discontinued EFI systems (Pro-Jection)....in fact, so do the others.
Pro-jection was an analog 80's thing and then the digital Pro-jection systems were rather basic 90's systems. All introduced a good 20 years ago.
The C5 came from GM at a slightly later time and they have discontinuing quite a few parts in from it. I think even some parts from the earlier C6's are being discontinued.
Time moves on and old stuff become impractical to support. Part of the reason is because they come up with newer stuff that is more complex, capable, smaller, cheaper or any other combination of such that applies..
I ran a EZ EFI on my roller cammed 383 for about five years, and am going back to a tuned Q-jet. Worked great for periods of time, till it doesn't work and you take a flat bed ride home. I have never had a carb leave me dead on the road. Going old school carb and HEI. I can diagnose in minutes and walk into a parts store and walk back out with parts to fix it instead of ordering on line and waiting.
I have FOUR 1227730 and carry a spare in the car, I rotate them every few months, no hard schedule....just to keep the capacitors in the electronics happy......junkyard picks for 5-10 bux each, back when.....

exactly, my commander 950 still works uses sensor that are available at parts stores and used by the newer systems also. Its just not as fancy and doesnt have all the bells and whistles.

Its not the money.I was worried about reliability. I have new holley on it now.Tired of vaporized fuel after shut down and other problems ethenol causes.
Not knowing your car's setup, so forgive if I suggest something you've already done. If you have a new-ish carb and the car runs good on it, I doubt I would suggest spending $1200-1500 for an EFI/line/pump. I'd just make sure all my fuel lines were good and spend a little time chasing the fuel vaporization/heat soak that you are getting. Reroute the lines, insulate them and/or maybe wrap the headers or ceramakote them.
Disclaimer.. I have a Holley Sniper and LOVE it. My car had an old PowerJectionIII unit which was failing and obsolete. Since I already had AN lines, wiring, and an electric fuel pump, the Sniper kit was a no brainer. If I had a good Carb on the car when I purchased there is no way I'd have spent the money at that time.
