If those pipes get hot enough to melt aluminum you have a much bigger problem.
HUH?????? what do you mean? What's aluminum? the rocker covers are ABS PLASTIC with an aluminum strip on the top. Melting point of ABS is 250°F The pipes can probably get to 500.

the normal rocker covers / rocker panels on these cars are NOT plastic... they are anodized aluminum

What auggiedoggy said they are aluminum. Just put a brand new pair on my car three weeks ago. Hurts when you have to trim them to clear headers and rear mounting bolt for side pipe cause they ain't cheap
1975 - I did not remove the chrome piece on the rocker.. I installed the covers on over top. I didn't like how the cover fit with the trim piece off. . Here is a pic.

1968-69 are press molded fiberglass with aluminum trim. 1970 on up are aluminum.
Thanks for all of the replies. I opted for the fiberglass covers from Mid America, since that is where we got the side pipes from. Hopefully they don't take too long to ship - this car sounds much more beastly now, and my son and i both are anxious to drive it.
And for the record, mine is a '79, and the entire piece of trim that goes in the rocker area is aluminum, just painted black except for the thin strip that sticks out at the top. We are saving the original rockers in case we ever decide to go back to the stock look (which is unlikely).
