So today my son and I finally got around to installing side pipes on our C3. Now we just need to give her a good wash and wax, and go for a drive.
Question for anyone who has, has seen, or knows about side pipes: the front of the pipes barely touch the aluminum trim piece that is screwed into the car, below the doors. It’s the same on both sides. Is that normal, and ok, or should it not touch the aluminum at all? It doesn’t touch the fiberglass anywhere.

Absolutely cover those! You will get a 3rd degree burn and it hurts! Ask me how I know..
You can get cheaper fiberglass covers that are paintable but those aluminum side rockers need to be removed to install the covers.
Do the fiberglass covers completely cover up the area that the rocker trim covers?

As Kirk and others have indicated, best to get proper covers.
While some/ most might disagree, aside from stance, wheels and tires, few things add as much as sidepipes on a C3 from a visual standpoint. Too loud? Yes. Fumes entering into the car when topless? Yes
Constant monitoring of speed bumps and curbs to keep from scraping? Yes. Would I put them on again? Yes, in a New York second!
I have a pair of ecklers fiberglass covers that I took off my car. They attach using the holes that the rocker trim uses. I wanted the trim back on so I make my own covers. You have to trim the rocker trim a little but no big deal. 50 bucks plus shipping
So do those cover the whole area that the rocker trim covers? We took the aluminum rocker trim off today and the way that area below the doors looks, definitely want to make sure whatever I get covers everything that the oem rocker trim covered.

Yes, as others have stated, , you MUST remove the rocker covers for proper instalation of that style side exhaust ,, and , please, complete the installation with the proper covers, , , , eather "exact" factory covers, or aftermarket look alikes,, , , everyone , even yourself , who rides in this car, will be grateful you did!!!

those are for the hooker style pipes which are completely different than the factory style pipes.

you can get fiberglass look alike covers that can hide the side exhaust and protect your leg but they need to be painted. They original covers can be found and repaired but they are usually pretty beat up used and you pay for the nicer ones. I love them personally.

You only installed HALF! Where are the covers? Why is the rocker panel EVEN THERE?(it'll probably melt!)....if you look at pix of correct original side-pipe cars, you'll see you're half done!
The AIM has a good couple of pages on this install.
The OP's car would look amazing with a set of the reproduction '69 fiberglass side pipe covers covers painted satin black. I think there is actually a set for sale in the "parts for sale" section.
I have a 69....with the original covers AND I bought a set of the high quality fiberglass ones that are on the car now....painted body color....they work extremely well.
Satin black kind of 'makes them disappear'....which is not exactly the point!
