Went to look at the timing of my 69 L46 350 this morning, and noticed what I should have seen when I bought it - the timing tab is missing. This is a 69 block with Engine Block ID: V1402HW
and Casting Number: 18 GM 3970010 with a Casting Date: K219 (November 21, 1969) and it does have the correct 8 inch balancer. However, there is no timing tab indicator attached to the
timing cover. So I had a few questions to those that might know the correct way this should go:
1. Does the late 69 L46 engine have the timing tab attached to the timing cover with the 2 bolts on the timing cover like I've seen other 350 have or is it attached another way?
2. If yes to above, is this something I can hunt down at Carlisle this week?
Here’s a pic of a 1970 L46 timing cover. The timing tad is unique to the L46 from its shape and the tab is spot welded to the cover.
The base engine cover looks the same but the spot welded tab is reversed so it fits the smaller damper. The welds are ABOVE the tab for the one you want (as shown in this picture).
