Default Front crank seal.

I want to replace my leaking front seal. I don't have the ability to remove the engine. I need advice on what to remove to get at the seal. Do I need to remove the hood to get at the front of the engine? I know to remove the fan, bottom pulley, balancer, and probably the fan shroud,,, but not sure the best way to access it.

Are you sure it s the seal at in the timing cover for the crank and not the balancer sleeve or oil pan gasket?

Yes, remove the things you mentioned, but leave the hood on. You'll need to lower the front of the oil pan, then remove the cover to r+r the seal.

Forgot to mention. This is on a 1968 327/350. I have already replaced the oil pan gasket with a one piece, and the rear main seal. I don't think it has a sleeve.

That could be the problem unless this is a new balancer and a seal hasnt worn a groove in the shank that slides on the crank.

The timing cover seal can & will wear a groove in damper's snout.

You can get a "redi-sleeve" that repairs the snout ...also replace the seal.

Pioneer , timken etc have the sleeves

Thanks for the info... once I get the balancer off, I can figure out why it's leaking. For now,,, help on how to get at the front of the engine would be good.

Remove:
Fan shroud .***** then cut a piece of cardboard to cover engine side of radiator ... fins cut your knuckles and get bent
Fan & Clutch
All belts
Lower pulleys
Water pump

*********** borrow a tool from parts store to remove harmonic balancer / damper ... inspect damper snout for groove

Not sure why the water pump would have to come off. Mine is a 68,,, no fan clutch.

You might take the timing cover off ... water pump first.

Another option to repair sleeve is leave the seal out about an eighth inch.

As long as you can keep the seal 'square' to the bore AND the outer casing can still seal properly, that will work, also.
