Exact dimensions of diff yokes?
Hi!
Does anyone have the exact dimensions, most importantly the length of the splined shafts, of the differential side yokes?
We have some worn ones that we'd loke to have a go at "recycling". The plan to machine the worn ends down ever so slightly, and then fit a machined and hardened "button" to the end to compensate for the missing length...
I have a colleague who's a very competent machinist who'll be doing the work. He hasn't seen the parts yet though...
It would be much easier just buying new ones, but once they get shipped to Germany they cost twice as much as in the US - and I'm as stingy as the locals here
Oh, and if it's a really stupid idea, please let me know

I believe Lars inserted buttons as you are describing to get them back to length

If you still have the snap ring groove you can machine them, if they are worn down past the groove I wouldn't. The dimension should be 200" from the ring to the end of the axle. Rebuilt axle available here are all over the place, some recent ones were close to 200 and others I have returned were as low a 170" You want the hardness to be in the 50-55 Rc range, upper 40's is ok but not over 55.
Keep in mind, axle endplay should be set with a correctly setup posi. You don't machine axle to fit a sloppy posi or one with loose cross shaft bores.
