Hello to everyone. I am thinking of repairing or replacing my speedo in my 69. The odometer works fine and I'm wondering if I was to buy a new speedometer if it is possible to install the present odometer into the new speedometer? Haven't got the speedo out to look and I wondered if it might be riveted or some other way to make changing it out very difficult. I would like to keep original mileage indicated on the new speedo or is it possible to put 90,000 miles on a new odometer. Might be the first person to want to add mileage!
I was also led to believe that the original cable would not fit onto the back of the new replacements being sold, slightly different diameter. Does any one know this to be correct or was someone just not installing it correctly? Thanks for all the help and take care.
Usually speedometer failure is the speed works and the odometer stops working due to a stripped gear. My '70 speedometer failed with the stripped gear. Actually both first drive gear and second gear.
Very odd your speed needle doesn't work. Maybe the grease dried out and the needle shaft is just stuck .
To answer your question, the odometer is just held in with one clip. Remove the clip, then remove the odometer.
If you purchase a new speedometer, just remove the odometer from the new one and adjust to the desired mileage. Similar to adjusting a Rubik's Cube only much easier.
Below is a photo of my failed '70 speedometer. I purchased a new speedometer.
I have now sourced the parts and repaired the '70 speedometer, not installed yet.
