Time for a new rotor for sure. Caps looks ok except the spring button under the coil is likely shot along with the rotor. Looks like crud around the center pin?

For future reference in checking a IGN Module for faults:
This is from Ray Bohacz, trouble shooting writer for Hemmings publications:
By using a breaker-point dwell meter on your HEI:
Connect one dwell meter lead to the tach terminal on the side of the HEI cap,
set the meter switch for 8 cyl scale.
You should get 8 -10 degrees dwell at idle.
At 2,000 RPMs you should have 30-35* of dwell.
If the modge is not in this range, it is defective. Even if the engine still runs.

I said it runs better, it idles smoother and an annoying exhaust popping has gone away. Seems to have a good bit more power now. But, if starting to go from a stop and I give it just a little gas it hesitates and feels like it is going to die. If I give it lots of gas it takes off just fine.

That sounds like a carburetion problem. Check your accelerator pump.

Q-jet
plugs and plug wires will be replaced next weekend. Since I am going to have to fiddle with the timing anyway I will replace the distributor as well it has seen better days.
