Default Cooling fans

Does the alternator you run have anything to do with the type of cooling fan you run. I have a 79 L82 that had factory air. I have a factory electric fan but the car has a mechanical non clutch fan blade. I know you get more hp with electric, but I really don’t care about a few hp loss. Thanks

Only if you swap over to electric cooling fans on the radiator. They take a LOT of current to operate, and the alternator needs to be more powerful to replenish the current used to run them.

I am quite confused with the previous owner decisions. I tested it yesterday and the fan works but someone cut the top of the shroud so the mechanical fan clears. Maybe the radiator wasn’t cooling properly so they changed to mechanical. I guess I will leave the electric unplugged initially and see how the mechanical fan works. Thanks

For your car, I believe both were stock, although it would have come with a clutched mechanical fan on the waterpump, and a shroud that fit around it. The stock (for L82/AC) electric fan would have been a pusher fan, I think. Nope, puller fan, as corrected below.

Can you post a photo?

79 L82 has a puller fan mounted in the shroud in front of the clutch fan. Temp sensor is in the right side head near the back. Set to come on @ about 230•

here ya go
Maybe post a pic of yours
too.

the shroud will hit top if not adjusted from bolts on side..it slides up a little..it can come loose and scrape fan on top below label, at least mine did after new radiator aluminum. My fan temp switch is broken to it runs all the time

I would like to thank all of you for the information. I disassembled the car sometime back but just realized I do have a clutch fan blade. The reason I’m being so cautious is because of all of the systems that have been compromised I want to make sure I have no further wiring problems in the engine bay. After tying up all of my loose ends if all goes well I hope to hear it run by this weekend. Thanks again

Got the car started and decided to go ahead and fill it with water to set the timing.Low and behold water started pouring out. I was curious when I was cleaning the intake but then forgot about the holes in the back of the intake right between the last 2 bolts on both sides of manifold. Anyone know what they are and how to plug them?

also remember to replace your support seals. This will help bring down the temp.
