Hello, I am new to the site and have read some great threads on this subject. I recently bought a 68 and the headlights go on but don’t raise when I pull out the switch. They do go up when I pull the bypass. Wipers work using both the switch and bypass. Can I conclude the headlight switch is bad?

Yes, the little vacuum slide has probably broken inside so its not sliding any more to block vacuum. My switches have failed and created a leak in that area that slowed down their function. You will need to drop the steering column down but not remove it and pull the dash forward to get at the switch. If turning the **** to the stop for the courtesy lights to come on doesnt work look and see if the ground strap is there or broken. Its easier to fix that "while you're in there" , check and see if you need bulbs too.
Before you remove the hoses mark their location or take a pic. It probably doesnt matter the position by why tempt fate
Thanks for the reply. I read a lot of the posts that support dropping the column and the ground needed to run the courtesy lights. The checking bulbs while I’m in there is great advise. I also saw posts that indicated these headlight switches are long lasting. I already bought a ACDelco part #D6251D, GM#19106986 that I hope works for a long time.
