Default Manual Window Regulator Problem

Does anyone have any diagrams/pictures/ information on how the manual window regulator crank gear is supposed to go together? it is in a 72.

I have been dealing with this thing for days. The friction spring is in what looks like the original position but the small gear thing is loose and has about 1/4 inch of rotational freeplay.

I just finished replacing the spring in the manual window regulator crank housing in my 73. I could not find any information on how the spring mechanism is supposed to operate.

I purchased the spring from Zip and replaced it and the crank worked the same way as before.

Therefore I'm assuming the spring is designed to catch the crank mechanism after turning the crank about 1/4 inch each way.

I think that is the way it is supposed to work since I can't find any other way to put it together. My problem is when winding the window down the gear thing gets pushed by the center mechanism with the spring creating the resistance, so far so good, but when the crank reaches certain points the main spring pushed hard enough to causes the little gear to get pushed and snaps ahead rather than pulling. If that makes any sense. And it does it consistently at the same point of rotation. It feels like it is jumping a tooth but I can clearly see that it is not. ??????

Your description does make sense.

When testing my manual regulator on my workshop bench, I noticed the movement was not very smooth. I actually purchased a used manual regulator since I thought the one from from my car was not working properly. Needless to say the replacement regulator worked the same way.

That's when I opened the crank housing to look at the internal gears and saw the spring and decided to purchase a replacement housing spring. It seems after lubricating the spring and case before reassembly that the cranking motion seemed to be less jerky. Not totally smooth, but somewhat better than before.

I'm going to put it back together with the parts I have and call it good. Lube it up good with lithium grease and pop rivet it back together. Maybe the weight of the glass will help smooth out the mechanism .

By the way, as an experiment on my workshop bench, I temporarily put the crank gear into the housing without the crank spring installed.

The motion of the window regulator was definitely smooth. The downside is that the large main spring on the window regulator creates a large mouse trap that can snap your fingers off when you release the crank handle.

My belief is the crank spring serves the purpose of providing enough resistance to prevent the window regulator from snapping back when the weight of the window is not installed.
