Cut the ends with a razor blade to get them as straight as you can ,then sand the ends with fine sand paper so you can polish the ends so the light will travel through the connection properly .Tape or use heat shrink (is what I prefer )to connect together and test ,I found glue will disrupt the light to much.

You can do as Sug suggests with the filaments , but get some electrical wire and strip the copper out of it and use the sleeve to hold the ends together , find some wire that the filaments will fit snug into . then you can heat shrink over the top or just tape it.

You need to 'capture' the many little strands of glass as a tight bundle before you can cut it properly. Maybe you can put a piece of heavy gauge shrink tubing just behind the cut point and use a heat gun to shrink onto the fiber cable and hold it securely. Then you can cut it with a very sharp X-acto knife in the middle of the shrink tubing. The cut must be perfectly square, if you are to put the ends together successfully. To connect them you need a splice kit.
