I purchase a 1982 Corvette several years ago. It was not running at the time. After alot of restoration work finally got it on the road. When I did I discovered that the fuel gauge was not working correctly. So I replaced the sender and fuel pump (had it out might as well make sure I had a new fuel pump one). Gauge still didn't register correctly. Replaced the fuel tank thinking maybe the bladder was bad. Gauge still acts the same. With 4 gallons the gauge is pegged at E. With a half a tank the gauge registers 1/4. When full ( gas pump shutoff has happened) the gauge registers 3/4. When filling the gauge moves up very slowly. Before I pull the dash to change the fuel gauge, I wanted to ask if anyone had thoughts on why I am having this problem. Forgot to mention the gauge cluster has a new printed circuit.
thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.
It sounds to me as if the float arm is bent incorrectly. You don't need to pull the gauge or the dash to test the dash unit you can do this at the sender. Go read this file. http://repairs.willcoxcorvette.com/1...-unit-testing/
Thanks for the advise.
Seems odd the the "old" sender and the "new" sender would have the similar symptoms (bent arm). I will have the gauge tested per your link.
Talked to the mechanic doing the restoration work. He now tells me that when the unit is outside the car the gauge goes from "E" to 7/8 Full. The gauge never goes to the "F" mark.
Not sure if this information changes anything.
