Thanks DC. In my case the kit came with more of a flat plate linkage that keeps the cable in closer to the tranny. "Dry fitting" with the tranny in the box looks like the alignment will be OK. I did have to file the slot that goes on the shaft though to get it to fit.
After discussing the situation with SST, it was determined that my kit contained the wrong shift lever bracket. I was supposed to have received the flat bracket like Vince has.
SST quickly sent out a new bracket. Got it installed. The alignment is much better and the shifter is smoother. I put the shift cable on the inside of the lever which is counter to the instructions I received but the alignment is better this way.
So, the 4l60E is in. Still needs some checks on clearance and alignment. A few ups and downs still for all that. I'm getting good at quoting jobs. My son helped. I told it should take 2 hours but probably will be 6. He showed up at 10 AM and head home a few minutes after 4.

Good job. My time estimation has not been very accurate with my project. It took less total time to pull the old engine and mount the new one along with the serpentine belt kit than it did to swap the gas tank. Blows my mind sometimes how the seemingly simple jobs can take so much time and effort while some of the harder jobs are much less trouble.
Yeah the fuel tank was a pita. Even worse getting it back in. I didn't even plan on pulling it until I was under there with the rear end out and looked up and saw the damned build sheet hanging over the back with still legible text after almost 40 years. I couldn't just leave it up there.
