Just replacing the power steering pump on my 81. New pump into the reservoir, moved my pulley from the old pump to the new pump. All seems to be going fine.
get the pump back into the car and the pulley alignment is about 3/8" off. The pulley on the pump needs to be back further. Any ideas how this could have happened? Have I got something missing that I've forgotten about that would move the pump back?
I did use the proper removal and install tool on the pulley.
I did have the old and new pumps sitting on a bench at work for a while before I moved the pulley over. Not sure if someone thought they would help by trying to move the pulley and the realized it needed a proper tool.
Pictures about fan belt angles are deceiving on the internet but it looks like more than 3/8 off. I hate to say this but I think you need to remove the pump, pull the pulley again and start over. Perhaps making a index mark with a Sharpie exactly where that pully needs to bottom out at. And I think that is the issue: not bottomed out on the shaft.
Only other thing I can think of is the pump is not far enough back on the lower bracket. Hard to tell in the pic but the pump looks about right. Just the pulley is way off.
Trying to think if the pulley could be put on backwards. I vote no.

We need a picture of the pulley, it looks lIke you have the pulley on backwards. It should cover the mouniting screws and most of the pump shaft.
pulley is definitely on the correct way. However I did look at pictures of what the pulley should look like and something has definitely happened to mine.
I'm guessing some has tried to be helpful by trying to remove it for me when I wasnt watching.
