Default timing lite?

Having always used a regular timing lite, I am ignorant about adjustable timing lites...Is it worth the $$ ??...what should an 81 350 auto be set at ??...does the computer affect the timing ???
God I love the smell of this forum in the morning...when the answers are there...thanks

I just use a regular one on my 81. Stock setting is 6 btdc but mine is set to 10 with no problems. Yes computer does control timing. The procedure is to first disconnect the 4 wire connection coming out of the dist. before setting timing.

I like the adjustable lights - it makes it possible to chart your timing curve as well as allow you to time to the 0 mark - there is no guessing then - it will also tell you to the degree what your timing is as opposed to matching to some vague mark on a stamped piece of metal.

In your case where the computer handles much of the timing it may not be as vaulable as an older car.

I have a fully adjustable one too. Well worth the $$, it just makes life easier :)

It's usefull on EST/ESC controlled timing too (computer controlled), you can always disconnect the EST on those systems.

I agree with everyone else the adjustable timing light is a valuable resource. With the ability to adjust the advance easily and also to troubleshoot problems like a spun balancer. I normally use the light to set the timing at 2800-3000 rpm, just dial in the advance you want and move the distributor till it all lines up.
