Find an original 1979 shop manual on eBay with a red cover. The reproductions are fine, too, but the original is cool to have and may have better resolution images. Reproductions can be found on eBay, any of the Corvette Vendors, and even Rock Auto.

I purchase the 1980 Corvette Shop Manual. I am slightly disappointed in purchasing this book first. Don't get me wrong, it has great information in it but not what I would call a good first book to have. I plan on purchasing the assembly manual and Service manual in the near future. Majority of the info that helped me get through some of the repair/replacement has come from the wealth of information on here.
The assembly manual is my least looked-at book. Every once in a while it's a good resource, but many questions I have I can just type into google images and get a clearer picture of what goes where. I would put that last on the list of books to get.
I don't know how a person can find a more comprehensive manual than the FSM. But if you're used to the Chilton/Haynes format, maybe that's what to get.
Thanks for the input everyone. My plan is to get it back in good running condition and drive it a while before rebuilding major components. This is a great forum to be in.
SAFETY is your most important issue. If you have significant work to do with suspension, brakes and/or steering, it would be better to do that work FIRST, before risking your car or your life on present state of the mechanicals.
