no, remove the gas lid door and rubber bib and there are 5 or six bolts holding the entire assembly in the tank remove these bolts& hoses ( here is a shop tip - always spray the hoses with penetrating fluid, otherwise you will fight hose that has been in place for 42 years) and withdraw the float , always use a new gasket
Do you have to drop the gas tank to remove the sending unit on a 78?
The challenge becomes the removal of the hoses on both sides that connect fuel and vapor lines to the fuel sending unit. Yeah, bolts are easy to remove and then after repair/replacement, then connecting hose to those vapor/fuel lines along with the spring clamps. Great time to replace those aged hoses as well.
Terrific thread!!! Good post guys..
I just had mine done at a local shop a few months ago after I tried to DIM..
Problems I had was finding the correct tool to get to and remove the bolts....I even tried a crows foot but did not have enough room to maneuver it!!
Next was the rubber hoses..What a real PITA...I could see them feel them but no matter what I did there was just not enough clearance at the top of the tank to get my hands in to maneuver...I was only ably to remove one spring clamp and the rest of the job went south from there!!!
It would nice nice if one of you posters could let us know what exact tools should be used!!
I had to drop the tank on my 79. It’s a pain. Remove the spare tire assembly and the drop the mufflers. Easier to replace those small hoses then. The small bolts on the unit were 10mm. !! New sending unit from Rockauto.
