okay, as for the mechanic, he’s a C7 owner, and has owned over 6 Corvettes. He claims to know a lot. I do know some guys locally that have several lifts (the Hangar Sharks from this forum). When they have space, I’d like to get the car towed out there so we can look at it in its own unit of time.
I like the idea of that $1600 base block (non long block). And yes, the more I look into the ATK one for $2600, I see it is missing some things (unlike the image).
He took it to a mech first. I assume he doesn't know an 883 from any other head. LS swap? Let's be realistic here. He needs either a new engine or a competent honest mechanic, or both. Scooce, where do you live? Let's either point him to a mech or shop or mebbe one of us put an eyeball on the car.
I was not assuming he was going to ID the heads. But if he takes it to a shop, then the more info he has on hand when the repairs start the better he can make decisions. Otherwise why did he come here asking for advice? I guess we should only give adivice after we check with you. Even you are making assumptions he may need a new engine.

Rebuilding the motor can easily outrun the cost of a crate motor. $4000 is a decent budget but I had more than that into a pretty tame rebuild with flat tapppets. I would look into a good block with a roller cam and aluminum heads' the crate guys get the same parts at wholesale also you can save money and have a warranty
the let expensive is $3600 for 365 horse and if you lean into your budget you can get up to 415 horse or, what I would do is go for a 5 speed. So you would have 36t hp nand a 5 speed for around $5500
In first post you mentioned a couple months. So, you have no plans to spend stupid money to get it back on the road by june? Good. Is the car at home or at somebody's shop? Get it home. Start doing research-homework. Buy some tools. Watch youtube videos. Get the heads off. Virtually every job you pay to have done costs more than the tools and parts to do yourself. And you still have the tools.

That's great advice. Buy the how to build a small block Chevy books. That's what I use all the time. It has good references, reminders, tips and you dont need the internet. I have notes all over mine from past builds and current ones.
Anyone can tare an engine apart for a look you can do that and have your corvette owner friend look at it. Pull it down to the short block. Good chance its a problem not in the shortblock itself, if its a bigger problem then tow it somewhere else if need be. Turn all the bolts or nuts to the left it comes apart. Now if you turn a screw to the left you end up with a screw loose, if you turn the screw right it is tight and always right. Lol

Just an update. Got car towed, put it on the lift. Started to drain the oil and about 2 or 3 quarts of anti freeze came out of pan before the rest of the oil. Going to pull the engine later today and take a good look. Hopefully just a head gasket or warped or cracked head. Will update as we move along.

Might be worthwhile to pull the heads before you pull the engine. If just a head gasket, you'll save yourself a lot of labor.

There is 3 or 4 of us helping him, good project to look forward to. I lived in Charleston for 3 years when I was in the Navy in the 60s. Love it there,

My birthplace. You wouldn't recognize most of Chas today. That old rickety swaying truss bridge from downtown across cooper river to Mt. Pleasant ... gone ... replaced by modern cable-stay work of art. Charleston's fertilizer plants mostly gone as well as that signature Charleston "aroma." Jeez, the navy base itself is closed, gone courtesy BRAC. Several Air Wings exist and NWS Goose Creek still there but w/ different mission. The old historic parts near The Battery still there & gorgeous. The horse-drawn carriages now have diapers. BTW, Myrtle Beach AFB ... Gone ... BRAC. Shaw AFB Sumter ... now joint USAF-US Army base ... BRAC. Confederate battle flags & Naval Jacks have become oddities ... thanks to Dylann. Today, probably more CBF at Higginsville MO than Chas.

I was on the Charleston Naval base and lived in West Ashley and North Charleston for a while. I was there from 85 to 89, left just befoer Hugo hit and had t go back and see my friends and the damge. All the sail boats up in Battery park adn the seafood house that got wiped out. I think it was the Atlantic house or something. I t was out on the island I think. I remember they built all those houses on the beach side that everyone was bitchin about, so God came through and did some beach front remodelling. Every one of htem was gone....I rebuilt my GTO's 455 on the Airbaseand had her painted in North Charleston at a small garage/ paint shop. THey did awesome work!!!
UPDATE: Pulled the engine. Took off the heads and they were a mess. Rust on the cylinder walls etc. Took the oil pan off and metal shavings were everywhere. He is trying to decide what crate engine he should get. Oh well gives him plenty of time to clean up the engine compartment. Bad luck for a young guy who just got into our hobby.

WOW! I was stationed at the main base for awhile and also at Goose Creek for awhile on submarine tenders. Lived on Johns Island loved it there and I could say that it was the best time of my life, but I would be lying as I was married to my first wife then. "That's all I have to say bout that".
