Thanks for all the responses. Red Topless Gator, the hangar guys, and myself have completely disassembled the engine. There was water and rust in the cylinders, antifreeze permeating the oil pan, etc. So engine is a total loss absent some $ at a machine shop. We are going with that $1,588 Jegs long block.
Does anyone know what all I have to send back to Jegs in order to get that full $410.00 Core Charge? Things are going to have to be reattached, but want to make sure I get that back when I send them my old engine.
OP
If you're referencing the jegs 282 vortec L31 I suggested in post #20 ... I don't see any mention of any core charge ... maybe I 'm overlooking it ?
I do suggest your hangar crew pull its pan & valve covers off and check all the caps & bearings ... checking all's good ...
... y'all do know a different intake (for Vortec heads) is Required ?
... y'all do know the fuel pump pad's Not finished ? ... Not an issue if you run electric pump.
... y'all do know it has a 1-piece rear main seal and, as such, cannot use your old C3 flexplate/flywheel ?

I ended up going with one of the ATK engines on Jegs' website. All in all, $2,000 (with a $410 core charge) isn't as bad as I was thinking. Putting in a new radiator, air dam and valence underneath the front, and throwing in some chambered exhaust. In the meantime, I'm going to be power-washing and scrubbing out the engine compartment, cleaning up some of the parts. Best to make the best of a non-ideal situation. The good news is this vehicle will be in a lot better shape than it was when I bought it! And taking apart an engine is a great way for a novice to learn about working on cars!
so, you got a whole club sticking you in the engine compartment? new friends too. not a bad overall outcome...
Yeah these guys have been a big help. I probably wouldn’t have even bought the car were it not for knowing these guys had my back with the expertise. Looking forward for the opportunity to return the favor (in labor of course not any actual knowledge hahaha)
