Default Supercharging 82 corvette?

Hey, my name is Austin. I am looking at buying an L88 hood for my car and adding a supercharger of some sorts. Any clue of what to be looking for?

Are you putting it on your CFI motor? NEVER saw a SC on a CF motor, would be different and probably pretty difficult. How do you plan on controlling the tune, since a stock ECM will not work? Joby (on this forum) put a turbo on his 84 CF and it was a box type. I worked pretty good from what I have seen and read on it. Good luck with your project.

I was looking into changing from the CFI and upgrading. I still am learning alot about the car itself. I brought the question up because i found a thread that said someone did a low profile SC on an 82 but then didn't show any information. My end goal (TC or SC ) would be 400whp and nothing above 10 grand to do.

As far as your hood goes it depends on what type of s/c you choose [a roots type or the centrifical type]. Roots style are the ones that stick up out the hood. The centriffical style mount like an alternator. Both are belt driven. Your hp requirement of 400rwhp is very easily doable without a charger of any style. My last engine was naturally aspirated dyno rated at 411 rwhp spinning 5600 rpm [350 cid] and very tame on the road. It cost me almost $10k to upgrade to a supercharger and now I'm worried about spitting out drive line parts. T

there are few L88 long hoods. and you have no way of knowing if and how well it fits until after you spend 6 to 800 bucks. you would be better adding the scoop to your hood. and about 500 bux cheaper.

Are you going to upgrade the 2-bolt, cast crank and cast piston shortblock or wait for the BOOM?

These ain't junkyard LS engines and can't take nearly what those can.

Hello, and good question. There is a lot of information out there on SC your car. However, the C3 has unique challenges on doing this. Not only that but as others have mentioned it is expensive. Your 400 HP goal at the rear is very attainable with a NA engine. You will have to do several other things to make your car utilize forced induction. See this post if you want some relative detail on installing an under the hood centrifugal SC.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...rocharger.html

It would probably be cheaper to build a good NA engine, but if you want to spend some money, and like the challenge...

After taking off the CF system you will also have to remove the stock ECM, it won't handle what you want to do, period. You are talking about a fairly large sum of cash since you will want to go through the motor and beef it up a bit with better rotating assembly parts. Then there is the issue of drive train parts with the added HP/Torq. The dana44 will not take the abuse long and if you want to go fast, do the 78/79 dana cast iron conversion and it will last longer. Good luck with your project.

On top of the above, You will need to either SERIOUSLY upgrade the 700R4 transmission as well as the aluminum cased differential & 2.74 rear end gears.

You're better off with a new/ different drivetrain.

If you love the car, and have verified it to be straight, clean chassis, which already can cruise well at 100mph~ maybe 120mph (to use that kind of power)

then I would invest in an LS drivetrain first and foremost before worrying about power adders.

This will make the car reliable, good on gas, the usual modern amenities become available.

but its so hard to find a worthy C3 for that swap... you need to be a frame specialist, sort of. You need to know what makes a car truly valuable (the geometry of the chassis and it's ability to roll along smoothly, hold alignment & tire wear consistently, etc.. )

Oh, don't get me wrong. I LOVE SC'ed anything and it IS VERY cool with a boost in power, but the down side is that you have to built it up to take the power increase or it will break soon enough depending on how many times you hit the loud pedal. You will find the weak link soon enough. I have thought about doing it to mine, but the fab time just isn't worth it to me right now.

I don't think anyone on this forum would disagree with that statement. I also think that most C3 Vette owners want you to go into a project like that with your eyes wide open. Not to discourage, but to be informed. IF you then decide to do it, go for it!
