Re: Ever go to replace a $5 part and end up... (Monkeywrench)
It's amazing what a spaghetti mess of wires is under the dash! My light switch does not raise the lights, it did when I tested before putting the dash back together, and I have not got the nerve up to deal with that mess under there yet. :bb

Is that the stuff that only sticks to itself? I can see that being nice when you go to unwrap it and not leave a nasty sticky mess on the wires plus black tape tends to come undone after a while.
Re: Ever go to replace a $5 part and end up... (Fevre)
Man, I must be tapping into the minds of you guys! Everything I have been doing lately I have seen show up on the forum the next day. I basically thought I'd take the seats out to do some good cleaning and after they were off I thought, hmmm, wouldn't be a bad time to take a look at the insulation under my carpet. Few minutes later I had all my carpet out and was off to Home Depot for some foil backed insulation.
Now, my dash is apart like yours cause I wanted to make sure I put that insulation EVERYWHERE. I started thinking about putting in a stereo system, redoing the fiber optics and just replacing the carpet also.
Please, somebody, slap some sense into me.

tshort,
I have been following almost all of the postings that you have. I started out just fixing some AC/Heat issues. I have now gutted everything out of the interior. Carpet, Insulation, Dash, Wiring... All out.
The worst thing, is like he stated above, this car was drivable before... :( Oh well, I will be a proud pappa when I am done.

OUCH!!
Sooooo, just what WAS it you started out to do??? :D
Kind of hard to tell from the pic exactly which $5 part you are replacing!! MJ
The clutch pedal bushing
But there was a bunch of stuff that NEEDS to be fixed.
Speedo, steering column bearings, horn contact, wiring needs to be cleaned up (duh), replace ALL bulbs, replace mechcnial tach guts with an electrical tach... the list goes on an on and on....
I was going to run the corregated conduit under the dash to trap the wires. I like this stuff as you can dd more wires to a run very easily. And friction tape where that this not possible.
Sort of. When I pulled my L88 an "over the counter 427 "( purchased from a chevy dealer back in the '70's), I intended to just freshen her up. Now the long block is almost finished and every part has been replaced- except the block! Somehow my 427 morfed into a 496  Life is good. :D
Re: Ever go to replace a $5 part and end up... (Monkeywrench)
The corregated conduit is what my new harness came with. You can then use cable ties at set points to keep the wires in...
I think that stuff is awesome. It also provides some insulation. I may use that for running my speaker cables from the back since I just installed all the foil covered insulation...

It's also very nice in the engine compartment. They sell Tee and 90deg fittings too. When it's all done it looks very nice and it's very well protected...

Ahhhh, I've got a cyber stalker  . just kidding. And that's only the work I've been posting here. I also just bought the CSI throttle bracket and Lokar throttle cable and installed it.....way cool. Also pulled the distributor and cleaned and re-lubed it. And when my new alternator bracket comes in from the mailman I'll be putting it in too. Good thing I love working on old cars.
Sorry, didn't mean to hihack this thread.
And back to your normal broadcast.........
