Default Rear bottom shock mount angle

What do you think is wrong with this picture? These rear bottom shock mounts are at a steep angle. As opposed to them being straight and level with the ground on my C3.

It is my friend’s rotisserie restored 1968 C3 big block car...

The shocks aren't straight up and down so the bottom isn't level to the ground, honestly they look about right from what I recall

the mount is splined where it goes into the bearing support. so either the splines are worn allowing the mount to turn, or it was installed correctly originally.

I believe they should be level, not pointed up or down

The shocks should be pretty straight, maybe a little tilt to the front. But, it appears that those lower shock mounts are not fully in the spindle housing.
There should be no space between them.

Is it possible to reverse left and right? They are not the same.

I was thinking the strut mount casting has a flat in it that corresponds to a flat on the shock mount, properly clocking the lower mount......but I could be remembering wrong. I do not recall have to position the lower strut mount, i.e. it would only go in one way.

Yes it does have a flat but wondering if left and right were reversed.

When in the air the wheels drop and camber inwards, making the shock mount go more towards level like shown above, but not sitting on the ground
The front of the strut part has the large flat on it that indexes the spline
You can't put the left on the right, the flat would be on the bottom instead of the top
I do agree it seems like it's not pulled in maybe all the way though

I was under there today replacing shocks and got a better pic of the Strut/shock mount, as mentioned above it should be pulled in tight to the shoulder

So although the angle isn't an issue for your friend, I'd say this should be checked/fixed

It appears to me like the OP's shocks were installed with rear wheels unloaded. At that time, the shock mounts were installed horizontally. Once the wheels dropped and settled into position, they were no longer horizontal. No real harm done as they are. The lower shock rubber is taking up the offset. If you want to straighten them, loosen the nut on the [outer] end of the strut rod, adjust position and tighten/pin nut.

Standard rear shock/strut-rod mount had a left and right part number 3820929 & 3820930. The mount had a builtin flat that lined up with the bearing housing flat. Also the standard mount was not straight so what you have is normal. An F41 mount were a different part number 3829265 / 3829266 and did not have the same angle as a standard mount. They provide more clearance for the bigger shocks F40/41 mount shaft on the left, standard on the right - the elbow section on the F40/41 shaft is a little beefier

My '75. Shock mounts are new. Old ones had some play. Note that they do angle down a bit (not parallel to the floor). Also, the shock is not 100% vertical. So, the most angle accounts for that.
