Before I change the oil next time, I want to run a cleaner thru to help remove old oil, sludge, etc. The products I have seen at auto part stores say to run in engine for about 5 minutes and then drain.
Which is the best product for this? Does it really help?
If you read the label they are usually just petroleum distillites (kerosene) I have used auto trans fluid as it is VERY high detergent. A co-worker claims all he uses after breakin is ATF in his family cars...go figure...
I used Auto-Rx on the recommendation of a guy that does oil analysis, and I have to say it works great. http://www.auto-rx.com/index.html Unlike some of the OTC parts store products, this stuff liquifies the crud on contact so there are no chunks floating around that can clog oil passages.
How many miles on the engine? If you remove a valve cover how much crud is pasted to the head?
Like Geoff1340 says, most cleaners are like kerosene.
Back in the 60's my friend had a 55 Merc whose engine internals were CAKED with crud and varnish. He put in a couple of quarts of kerosene and ran the car only a couple of miles. When we drained the oil you could not believe the gunk that was removed. We pulled the valve covers and the springs, pushrods, rocker arms, - everything - was SPOTLESS!!
Then we put fresh oil in and fired her up. The exhaust SMOKE was overwhelming!!! Turned out the crud was the only thing keeping the engine together. Rebuild time.
Be careful what you ask for. Good luck in any case.
