Wanting to do some touch paint on my 69 sbc engine that still has original paint. I had an older can of Chevy Orange I had picked up a few years ago, but notice the paint is way to light orange to match up anywhere near my color, which seems to be a darker reddish orange. I realize my paint is heat baked and over 50 years old, so I’m not expecting a perfect match, but realizing there’s probably a number of different shades of “Chevy Orange” out there, I thought I’d see what the Forum’s thoughts are. Thanks!
chevy bought engine paint by the truckload in that era. they didn't give a little bit of a crap about desirability, collectability, color match, etc. they bought cheap orange paint and painted engines until the paint was gone and got another truckload. some darker, some redder... there is no paint code for correct chevy orange engine paint.
The original Chevy Orange paint was manufactured and supplied to Chevrolet by Pratt & Lambert, Inc.
Pretty close matching rattle cans-
DUPLI-COLOR Engine Enamel Chevrolet Orange #DE1620
Rust-Oleum Engine Enamel Chevy Orange 248941 or the high temp version 248905-
Seymour EN-48
Although most claim the rattle can stuff is too glossy
If you've got someone to mix it-
PPG Delstar Chevy Engine Orange, DAR #60524H - H Mixing Formula (1 qt, cumulative): DMR 400 4.0 units DMR 405 160.0 units DMR 464 660 units DXR 495 680 units DMR 499 1250 units Mix the paint 8:6:1 Delstar/DTR601 Reducer/DXR80 Catalyst and shoot it with a paint gun.
I used dupli-color 1620 on my engine- everyone thinks its original!!!

Agreed. I also noticed when buying the 1620 that Dupli-Color makes a Chevy Orange-Red (DE1607) too. I wonder if folks are buying the orange-red version - not a lot of difference in the color swatches, but the Chev. Orange 1620 is much closer to my mind's eye for what it should look like.
The orange-red color was put on the original SBC 265 engine in '55 & '56...maybe some in '57 (not sure). After that, it was Chevy Engine Orange till the GM Mark of Excellence turned the engines blue (sorry late-70's owners; it just doesn't seem right to me....)
I understand that GM allowed 15 seconds to paint each engine. The bottom of most of the Oil Pans didn't get much or any paint. The NCRS has pictures of this in the judging books. I have always wondered how thee Aluminum Head Engines were painted. Was there a quick cover for the heads to keep overspray off? I really don't remember seeing Aluminum Heads with paint on them, almost as if the blocks were painted before the heads were installed like we would do it.

PPG has discontinued the Delstar line, but they have crossed over the color to the "Omni" line. Here is the info for the correct color from my "Paint Formulas" paper:
PPG Omni MTK (Acrylic Urethane) Chevy Engine Orange, color code MTK 60524 D
Mix the paint 4:1:1 Omni/MR186 Reducer/MH167 Hardener and shoot it with a paint gun. If you have a new engine back from the machine shop and it’s bare metal, prime the entire engine, block, heads, etc. with PPG DP40LF Epoxy Primer mixed 2:1 with DP402LF Catalyst. You won’t believe how good it will look.

Will that give the proper NCRS blackened spot where the exhaust x-over is?
