That's pretty good to get down to 42°F. I'd leave it be for now. From that generic R-134a table I suspect you might be a touch undercharged but not worth messing with if you're getting down to 42°F.

What would make a big difference is good electric fan for a/c cooling at idle....but then you have to make sure your alternator can support the fan and the a/c running and keep the battery charged.

Awesome!
drive it for a while and see if you are satisified..
if you go bythe manual..max fan high windows down...doors shut..keeps exhaust heat out of cabin but open windows apply some heat load..
it also mentions 2000 rpm fan LOW...the compressor should cycle out...off....at that time of compressor tirning off read temperature at center vent..spec r12 34-42f...im 42 and r12...
id be happy with r134 below 50

cool cruising!,,
watch your cooling system...ac adds decent heat load and if you are marginal will expose weakness..keep eye gauge

On LOW, the temperature is about 48 so It is still good.

Normal op temp is about 200 degrees and I didn’t see much of an increase. I don’t know if the auxiliary fan runs at idle but I’d do know it runs with engine off and key in ACC position. So I let it cool down like that.

thanks for advice.

To help close the loop on the original "rattling noise" that was fixed when you tightened the A/C compressor belt, I had the same issue. I discovered that when the compressor was engaged the belt was hitting the black metal belt guide which is probably there to protect hose lower radiator hose. The compressor belt felt as if it had tightened adequately - and, visually looked as if there was plenty of space between the belt and metal guide - - until I noticed some of the black paint on the belt guide was rubbed off. So, for others of us with rattling (mine sounded more like a rattling metal chain) noise coming from the A/C compressor I wanted to share the specific causal of why snuggly tightening your compressor's belt may have fixed your mysterious noise issue.

Yup. I have endured that same thing before.

no clue about your year and aux fan but on a 79 it only comes on when VERY hot..
i let mine run all the time and have it bypassed

Somebody called it earlier in this thread - I am seeing leaks in cooling system. So going around and tightening hose clamps.
