Default 75 to 79 tail light question

Can anyone tell me if the 75 to 79 tail light lenses separate from the housings when you remove them like the earlier models, or are they sealed units like the 80 to 82 models?

Take out the screws, and the lens comes off. Simple.

The 1975-1979 Tail Lights (And Back Up Lights) ARE 1-PC - - - The lense is NOT separate.

they can be split in half but it takes patience and finesse. heard of people doing it to use on 68-72 tail panel.

Haha. 3 answers!

I'm deciding what to do with my new c3. It came with the hated bubble lights, and I want to change them, but the perfect taillight does not exist. I like the 84 C4 look with plain red tail light were all 4 work together.

It's a 79, I think the stock taillights with the chrome / stainless trim rings look great on the older chrome bumper cars, but a little dated on the rubber bumper cars. I thought I might get them anyway and do the "halo" mod,( using 4 of the non back up units) but not really wanting to saw them apart.

I wish the bubble lights had less pronounced curve. A slight curve more like the early C4 and they would have been my favorite pic. They are just too bubbly for me.

The '75-'79's are one piece.

I have to agree with you on the bubble lenses, they are so "disco era" you can only run them if you're wearing 3 inch platforms and polyester bell bottoms while listening to the Bee Gees on 8 track, oh and your girlfiend has to have that big Farrah hair.

OK, I'm down with the hot 70's babe with Farrah hair, and my C3 is supposed to have a "working" factory 8-track, and I think I still have my treasured AC/ DC 8-track tape stored somewhere. Not to keen on disco though

So help me out here.....

I've narrowed my choices to this.

Forget the Halo mods ( I really like them though) and just replace the bubbles with originals, and add LED bulbs to brighten them up.

OR

Install originals, but double up on the outer units, and skip the back up's so all 4 work for brake and turn signal?

What say ya?

BTW, what ever I get will have to work with the big Indy spoiler on the back.

I installed LED's rear lamps from Corvette Central. it comes as a complete kit that replaces the b/up lamp into a stop lamp. as for b/up lamps I went to Zip Corvette and ordered their license plate b/up set which is not installed in this pic

Yes it can be done. I made a jig and very carefully split them on the bandsaw. Started with new oem units. This is my 75 with a 68-72 tail.

The stockers are very bright with healthy bulb holder sockets and proper grounds. led tails look funny to me on a C3.

Anything CAN be cut into more than one piece.
So if you put that one-piece housing thru a bandsaw you got 2 pieces.
If you pry off the chrome ring, you got 3 pieces.
Then if you drop it you can have many more.

Yeah, I'm going back stock.

Still undecided on going with the inner backups, or 4 of the stock outers to get all 4 blinking and brake lighting.

My wiring is already setup for that last option. I'm not even sure if the previous owner left the backup socket intact?

It’s a fiberglass cap that bolts onto a 74-82 to emulate the chrome bumper cars. In my case “no bumper” as I chose not to install the pretend chrome bumperettes that come with the kit.

Highly controversial as exactly zero of the original hidden impact safety equipment is retained. Some folks don’t care for the way the part aligns with the lines of the car.

You have to source earlier 2-piece tail lights or split the ones you have. If you care about a license plate light you make your own. I used motorcycle style bolts with integrated lights.

For my hacked up 75 I think it fits. I might even paint it someday.
