Got radio working but there is a constant humming sound coming from the speakers. its very noticable on fm and somewhat on am. Any ideas why?
Thanks Telk
There is a condensor on the coil which acts as an aid in radio ignition suppression. Is yours in place? The fact that things change when you touch the antennae makes me think you might need to check for a bad ground somewhere in the system.
Check up under the rear of the car. Look for the large metal "ground plane" which should be mounted under the antenna. Also, look for the antenna ground strap. It should run from the antenna base to a bolt on the frame. Also, check to see if the antenna is fully plugged into the side of the radio. If it still hums, it just might need a pro to rebuild it. Many companies specialize in rebuilding antique auto radios. Hope this helps. Chuck
Try isolating it to whether the noise is internal to the radio or external to it, i.e., move the car and see if flourescent light or motors in the area are causing the noise. Also, remove the right side trim panel and connect a spare antenna mounted to a ground plane (isolated metalic base) to see if it is an antenna problem. Most likely one or more electrolytic capacitors (the biggest ones in there) have deteriated. Electrolytics have a limited life span and are said to deteriate faster if they are not occassionally repolarized by being powered up. Otherwise, most of the other components including transistors should last a life time unless hit by lightning or static electricity. Good luck

With it NOT running that would not matter.
That depends on if not running means engine not running at all, or if he just can't drive it around the block to another location to see if reception improves elsewhere. :D But yeah, I see your point. :) ~Juliet
