Default Cam question

What type of cam would be considered "mild" and what would be a bad a## cam? Would my XE274(?) be mild?

That should be a nice street performance cam for a Corvette with 9 to 1 compression.
A bad a## cam wouldn't idle well, would fall in it's face in low speed trffic and run like someone opened the gates of he## above 3000 RPM, in other words no fun on the street.
A mild cam would be something along the lines of the Crane 260 series.

Subjective question. What difference does it make? Also depends on C.I. If in a 350, you need a 4spd. or higher converter/gears in an auto, could be considered bad. If in a 454, then a good min. cam for 4spd., could be considered mild.

Here is a list of cams I am putting together. It is not finished yet. Generally speaking, in a 350....Cams with a duration under 210-212 have a good idle and low to mid range torque. Cams with duration of 212-220 have a fair idle with the power band moving a little higher into the "strong midrange" area. Cams over 220 duration tend to have mid-range to high RPM potential and a rough/choppy idle. Note that the Performer RPM cam has a duration of 234, which is why a lot of people don't like it. Also note the 274 has a centerline of 106 where as Comp Cam has a centerline of 110 and the LPE and GM cams have 112. Smaller the centerline angle, the lower rpm torque potential.

If I have mis spoken anyway, I am sure someone will correct me (and please do).

http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/69s.../cam_page.html

You have to ask yourself, "Where does my engine spend most of it's time?" and "When crusing, what RPM am I at".

I am planning my engine rebuild ( in a few years). I am going to a strong torque street engine (no racing, max RPM is 5500). Crsuing is at 2000-2500. This is what I am thinking:

-355
-AFR 180 Heads
-Any of the Cams marked in Yellow (Leading toward LPE 74211, good duration and high lift)
- 1-5/8 Headers
- Edelbrock Performer Pro-Flo EFI.
-10:1 Compression

OK, then if this is true then my engine builder has chosen for me the wrong cam for my 383+ that is in progress right now. (it is a 383 that is .040 rather than .030) with 10:1 pistons and the cam he has chosen is this one: http://dab7.cranecams.com/SpecCard/D....asp?PN=113942

I'm after a good enough idle to use stock turbo 350 convertor, and I'm gonna have a performer manifold with the 795 CFM Edlebrock Performer Q-Jet carb. Also ceramic headers will be installed with the engine.

Advice??? Thanks

Paul

Good cam for your purposes in a 383, no problem w/ stock converter. See your previous engine topic.

Ok guys.

I am looing at installing a new cam on my daily driver:
stock 95 Coupe AT.

Looking to increase low to mid range torque and still have a good idle.

I would also like to know if there is a tutorial that explains the numbers that I am seeing in reference to to cams. I would really like to understand what I am doing.

I am still in information gathering mode and I appreciate the help.

Thanks

First, I would suggest an excellent book, John Lingenfelter on Modifying Small-Block Chevy Engines/ Very good. A lot of detail on building high torque street engines.

I would determine what the duration of your current cam is. Then find a cam with either a little more duration or more importantly, more lift. I think you have a roller cam, so any aftermarket roller caa should fit, I think. Someone else should help though.

I am gonna go out an look for that book tommorow. Did not mean to barge in on a C3 question but you guys were discussing what I wanted to know on my C4.

Hmm I guess my cam with 248 at .050 is a little radical. It really comes on at 3500 and really goes to 7000. I like it that way. It is more suited to a 383 but that is in the future. It really is not to bad around town also. Would not want it as a daily driver cam

I have that cam in my 74 with a 350 4-speed. You shouldn't have any problem with it and it's a nice cam. Mine idles at 850 with 15 inches of vacuum. In the larger engine it should run even better. You'll know that you have a cam in it because you will have a slight roll at idle. I lug mine around town at 1K rpm with no problems and it really wakes up once you get to 2K.
