Default Ignition switch replace

I am trying to replace the ignition starter switch on a 1977 corvette and having a difficult time lowering the steering column low enough to get access to the switch. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Assuming it is the same basic procedure as a 73, I'm fairly certain you need to remove the bolt from your rag joint at the steering column end. You may also need to open the split joint on the upper portion of the rag joint (end that attaches to steering column). Then loosen the two bolts on the firewall at the end of the steering column where it goes through the firewall. Finally remove the 4 bolts that hold the steering column to the dashboard. Note: if your transmission lock out is in place then you will need to either loosen it or remove it, I'm not sure as mine was removed from my 73 4 speed. Also check out the Jim Shea papers (I put a link in below to them), I'm sure he has one on lowering the steering column (might be removal of the column). Good luck, Russ
