While researching prices for a replacement Alternator for my '79, I noticed that there are two different amp choices. How do I know which I want?
42amp, 70 amp, 61/63 amp, 100 amp or 140 amp??
More is always better :D, I replaced my 69's 61 amp with a 95 amp from a mid 80's Camaro, Autozone removed the serpentine pulley and fan and put my old alternators pulley and fan on it. I think I got it with a lifetime warranty for about $50.00. It looks just like the old one and provides plenty of power for just about anything.
It is best to replace it with the same that came off. Is the one you are replacing the original?.If you have the original just get it rebuilt, and tested.
On my 79 It has the 63amp alternator.the car has full power, and air.
Check you alternator it should have the part #,ampererating, voltage rating and date code stamp located near the adjusting mount boss on the drive-end housing
If electric radiator fans are to be mounted, then the more powerful alternator would be a good idea. You might do an archive search on the topic, but I remember threads of some members having problems with electric fans. The fans, in addition to the other electrical demands of the car, were drawing more current than lower amp alternators could supply.
