this is the situation. i changes the water pump on the car about 2 months ago , at that time i changes the coolant as well. about 3 days ago the temp on the car went past 260 degrees and i shut it . i checked the radiator and it was empty. i refilled with coolant and it is fine now. where did the coolant go ? i couldnt find any leaks.
You probably had air pockets that finally worked their way out of the block. The radiator really doesn't hold that much. Just keep an eye on it. If it keeps doing it then you have a problem.
just got my haynes corvette manual and it says to do maintenance on the car every 250 miles or every other week. i have never done this , but i will in the future. is there a way i can tell how hot the car is running with out the thermostat that is hooked up to the car ? i dont trust the coolant temp and the oil gauge.
See if you can borrow a digital temperature gage. I have one at work that I use occasionally for home stuff. My Radio Shack digital multimeter does measure temperature, but it takes a bit longer for the reading to stabilize.
Once you have the gage, remove your cap and idle the car until the coolant is circulating (thermostat is open) and the operating temperature is steady. Stick the sensing element into the coolant and wait a few mnutes.
Here is an old auto mechanic's trick. Whenever you install a new thermostat drill a small hole in the flange, this will help the cooling system bleed off this trapped air. The bleed hole helps stop that big burb you get when you first warm up the engines cooling system . Some new thermostats come with this hole already drilled.
