69 427...I have a delco remy 1100256 63A alternator. The nut where the power leads connect is stripped. I would like to replace it and am wondering if I should upgrade to a higher amp.
The car has vintage AC with a secondary cooling fan. I am also running a stereo with an amplifier. Planning on adding relays for headlights for a later headlight upgrade.
There are as many options and opinions on upgraded alternators as there as there are on aluminum radiators and motor oil. This includes opinions on how to upgrade the wiring. There really should be a "sticky" on this subject.
On my car, with Vintage AC, electric fan, EFI with in-tank electric fuel pump, electric headlight actuators, and upgraded stereo, I went with a 140A alternator from Powermaster. Along with that, I upgraded the wiring.
I'm sure the usual suspects like @Richard454 can chime in with ideas.
If you needed higher output it would be likely that the yellow plastic on that connector would be at least somewhat melted from the heat from the additional amperage demand.
my guess is so far you have not stressed the output of the alternator capacity.
that being said usually where the output falls short is at idle since the full output of the alternator is not available at that rpm.

I went ahead and got the same one that was on it. Now I have to remember how to reinstall the bracket. I found the below pic. Is this correct?
had trouble with my 81 vette purchased a rebuilt, should say 2 rebuilts from oriellys went to napa $110 dollars got a new on and havent had a drop of trouble since
DO NOT BUY REBUILDS!!!! They are mostly junk and have been for the last 40 years..very hit or miss....Most electrical components should always be purchased NEW if possible. I would only buy rebuilt if you have no other choice.
I also strongly discourage higher output alternators that are OEM 10/12Si type alternators since they were never built with additional cooling for the higher amperage.
If you are looking for a 140 amp alternator go with a CS 144 OEM Type GM alternator that was made for and rated for 140 amps by GM and will give you about 90 amps at idle......

Agree..The CS130D rated at 100 amps is a good replacement over the stock alternator for 100 amps.
For 140 amps, I have the CS144 now for years and I did buy it from the website referenced above in TN. I also bought a replacement CS130 for my grand prix from them along with a Chrysler 300 alternator and starter, all NEW. The CS 144 alternator puts out about 90 amps at IDLE. The CS130D above will not produce that kind of amperage at idle.
