Chimera! Great point, true story this!

My buddy had a DONZI with a 350-350 (1970) in it.
We're bapping back and forth on Rangley Lake in ME.
Chugg-chugg....not so so good.

Me...."Do you have any tools?"
Buddy " A combo screwdriver and a plier"
Me " I think your points have 'had the raddish'"
We look around...in glove compartment was a 'nudie' matchbook (oh so politically correct!)
I fold the matchbook cover over...{**** out, of course!}
Say " that looks good to me"
Adjust the points.

TO THIS DAY HE REMINDS ME THAT THE 'FEELER GAUGE' IS STILL IN HIS TOOLBOX!

My take:

point eliminators: once installed no maintenance needed until no warning failure

points: need regular maintenance (yearly), never been stranded by them failing

.019" is the proper gap for the points. No needle box required.

an ****-retentive pal w/ good memory had gone to the trouble of measuring between different joints on his hand, wrist & elbow; he could roughly measure lotsa stuff with that.

I'm sure you can find something similar to gage points; it's a get-r-home deal. I also have a dwell meter & strobe timing light; don't tote 'em around with me though.

I've used Pertronix in five or so different cars over the last 25 year and never had a failure even once. Mind you none of them got as hot as under the hood of a Corvette.

If you do swap out your points you should carry an extra module with you. I have been stranded twice because of module failure......both times with a gm hei distributor!!
I also have had my hei module fail twice... in 6000 miles! and yes I ran a new 12awg wire for the distributor.... had a points replacement module in the original distributor that came with the car that looked ancient. also had one in my vw kit car that I installed and had no issues in the 7-8 years I owned it.

I have an old Sears Dwell/Tach meter. It still dead nuts on when I checked it against a modern dial back timing light set in RPMS mode. These things are great. Even my old tach in the car matches the dial back reading. 750 rpms all around.

You need to sell some of those dwell meters to forum members!

This one I keep calibrated. Yes, I have that tool too.
Every bit as accurate as Innova, but the Innova is the shizzle.

Here are points currently on the market.
Far left, the dreaded uniset is still made.
the Accel unit has a stronger spring for drag strip.

Ok, hold up. I went ahead and installed new points, but I installed the "uniset". Why are they "dreaded"?

High failure rate due to flawed design.
The condenser unscrews, grounds out, fails, etc.............
When they first appeared, they looked like a good idea.
Dealers then were replacing them as fast as they had installed them.
This left a bad taste that still lingers.

They also could not dissipate the heat well enough at the condenser being attached....
We would not sell them in the 80’s do you every single one being warranty.....
