Default Fuel Pump

Hi Guys. I made the mistake of leaving fuel too long in the tank. I replaced the tank, sending unit, flushed out the fuel line, and then opened up the fuel pump. The large round diaphragm is crumbling, and the metal plate corroded. The pump is being used on a 383 built from the original 73 L-82. It is not a stock original pump. It is designed to allow the top and bottom parts to be rotated, which was helpful due to all the "stuff" right in that area. A flat plate on the bottom has a threaded fitting for fuel out to the carb, and a smaller one for the return line. There is one threaded fitting on the side, for fuel into the pump. I have looked at catalogs for the big name parts companies, and at numerous photos, no luck. Was considering a rebuild kit. Anyone recognize this type of pump? Thanks for any thoughts.

That's a home-made part built by someone with a machine shop. Nice setup built by someone who knew what they were doing, but you're not going to find any "rebuild kits" for that custom pump, unless you can track down the machine shop that built it.

Thanks for the input sir, very interesting. Hopefully the shop that built my engine years ago will be able to help. If not, any chance there is a fuel pump you could recommend? PS proud to say running the original Quadrajet on my engine.

Thinking about the fuel pump on this build, I remember installing it, so I don't believe it came from the engine builder. Hoping someone recognizes it, or open for suggestions. Thanks all.

Why don't you just get a Holley 12-327-11. It can be rotated to any position, and will provide all the fuel requirements you will ever need for the 383. And it's much smaller than the one you have.

Today's Gasoline is loaded with ~10% Ethanol in the gasoline. Ethanol absorbs moisture like brake fluid does. Your fuel pump diaphragm would have been eaten alive by the ethanol. I hope the rubber parts inside your carburetor are new enough to be able to handle the ethanol. Anytime I leave a Corvette sit I always add Ethanol Stabilizer to the fuel system and run it long enough to get into the entire fuel system.

Look at the bright side, a C4 Corvette has several diaphragms and they are all damaged by the Oxygenated fuels of today. Obama wanted to raise the level of ethanol to 15-20% to use even more corn so we couldn't give it to hungry nations. All of the auto manufacturers came back with No warranty coverage on any car that used over 10% ethanol. To make my C4 happy with 10% ethanol I had to replace the fuel pump, Fuel pressure regulator diaphragm, EGR diaphragm and many other parts.

There are a lot of choices in the old style fuel pumps still but they all seem to be focused on High power applications.

Very good points! I can get ethanol free fuel, 90 octane. Will try that. I think the carb rebuild has the updated parts. Thanks for sharing!

That pump looks just like my RobbMC pump see pic below. It is a real good pump and has a great GpH flow. You might want to give them a call about a rebuild kit.

That is it, I recognize the company name on that letter head. Thanks! I will look into it.

What does that fuel pump do that makes it so special? What is in the case?

I have never seen one like that.

Thanks for educating me a bit! That is what I love about this site.

Interesting.
My previous post was mostly correct, "built by someone with a machine shop. Nice setup built by someone who knew what they were doing."

I believe the Carter M6900 allows you to change the inlet and outlet positions. 5.5 to 6.5psi and 40gph for less than $100.

Hello Sir; Tried installing the Holley 12-327-11 on my 73 small block. Any position I rotated it, either the inlet, or outlet fittings were too close to the frame. Would you happen to know if this pump will work with 90 degree fittings, instead of the strait fittings. Thanks very much for you time and thoughts.

Disregard the question about the 90 degree fitting. Was frustrated that I could not find one at any parts house close to home. Ordered one on line, should work. Thanks!
