Default Removing Trans cooler lines from TH350

Hey CF,

The engine / tranny pull has gone pretty well up until I got to these trans cooler lines on the passenger side of the Th350. How the heck am I supposed to get these bolts off? There’s no space to come in from any angles to screw out. What am I missing? I’m pretty close to just cutting these guys and buying new ones.

Any tips?

Ian

If your crossmember is a bolt in you can un bolt it and lower transmission enough to get a good angle on it , or remove trans mount temporarily to lower for access

Hmmmm. My TH400's lines are pretty easy to access and don't appear as buried as your 350. It appears the two lines have been crushed a bit on the bends already, so cutting them off and replacing anyway is probably advised. What is the pipe in the foreground right side of the pic - the exhaust? Perhaps once this is removed access will free up a little.

Eric P is right that if you remove the cross-member the trans will drop down nearly 5-6". You'll have to remove the cross-member when pulling the engine and trans, so it's all part of the process anyway.

Don't see how you are getting much fluid flow there anyway. Cut them off and start over.

I lowered my 78 350 to replace the transmission lines (as Eric describes) but do use flare nut wrenches...makes life easy.

I wonder if anyone makes flare nut crowfoot wrenches? That would work good.
I agree with cutting those though.
I replaced mine with braided lines.

Crowfoot wrenches, if you don't want to cut the lines.

BTW...if you cut the lines and do not lower the transmission, you then need to reinstall the new lines. To do that, you need..... (wait for it)

CROWFOOT WRENCHES !!!

(Buy the individual crowfoots you need. Then you don't have to cut the lines or drop the trans.)

Leave the lines connected at the tranny for now and disconnect the lines at the radiator. Pull the engine/tranny as an assembly, and the lines will come out with it.

When you do the re-install, attached the lines to the tranny once the tranny is mated to the engine and drop the whole thing in with the lines attached so you don't have to re-attach them once the tranny is in the chassis.

Crows foot flare nut of the right size will get that done. But I agree, new lines look to be needed at this point which will require the correct tool as well.

Amazon Amazon

At one time I did this professionally. This style crow foot tubing wrench with an 4" 3/8 extension will get them every time.
