Hi Gusto

Definitely leaking from carb side not the the flare nut side. The nylon washer is very thin. I think I found correct ones and ordered them. That nut seemed to turn pretty easy until it bottomed out. I was curious to know how much torque to put on it. Don't want crack the housing.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. Looks like I the covers are sealed. I used
the felpro 1603 cork gaskets with rtv on the cover side only and let them sit on a flat surface overnight. Worked like a charm.
I had a bear of a time trying to get the fuel line sealed. After multiple tries I found a burr on one of the threads. Deburred it, oiled the threads and it finally sealed. I don't think I want to change fuel filter again. Those threads are not very robust.

A lot of folks here seem to like the Fel Pro 1628 valve cover gasket. It's a silicone molded rubber with steel core construction and has steel compression limiters to keep you from crushing the gasket where the bolts pass through.

It is important to begin with a flat valve cover sealing surface, especially in the area where the bolts pass through into the head. Another thing to do is run a straight edge along the valve cover mating surface on the cylinder head. Any significant irregularity can make installing leak free valve covers an added challenge. There's a lot of good info in this article in Super Chevy from July of 2017.

Of course an even better solution it to look for a nice set of L82 aluminum valve covers. Their additional rigidity can go a long way to solving the proverbial leaking valve cover issue. It was the first modification I made to my '77 Corvette shortly after buying it new back in the day. JEG's and Summit both carry them for about $200.

Good luck... GUSTO
Get these and be done with it. A new valve cover would also be a good investment.

Guys

Well, the rear outside corner of the valve cover is leaking. I had rtv'ed the cork gasket to the cover and weighted it on a flat surface overnight. I am sure the gasket was flat in the cover. I'm using long load spreaders on it too. I guess I will take it off clean it with some brake cleaner and lacquer thinner and spread some rtv on that rear corner and tighten it down again. And try to keep torque under 5 ftlbs. I am sure I didn't over tighten them.

Can I reuse the cork felpros if I clean oil off with thinner and brake cleaner? Will the rtv adhere? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Not a big fan of cork gaskets, so I wouldn't reuse them. The Fel pro perma seal are the best you can buy. I've used them many times, and never had a problem.

The very first reply suggested the Fel-Pro 1628, and many more posts seconded that suggestion. They are reusable, and don't leak, and now perhaps you understand why they were recommended despite the cost.
