The pinion seal on my 81 is leaking. Can I change the seal without opening the backside? I've seen videos, not vettes, of just removing the driveshaft, yoke, pinion nut and then picking old seal out and replacing. Then torqing the nut back down. Isnt there a crush sleeve that needs to be spec?
Before disassembly measure pinion rotating torque in inch pounds. The hardest part for me was removing the companion flange nut. It was hard to use long breaker bars without the clearance provided with a lift. Had to get a more powerful impact wrench and bigger compressor.
Here’s the shop manual page from a 79.
Charlie 1979 shop manual
I replaced mine in car a few years back. marked everything I could think of with paint dots. counted the threads on the shaft etc. had to get the nut off with a large air impact as well. was really glad I counted and marked everything.
installed new seal. assb to precisely where it was before.
must be 7 or 8 years now. no leaks and no troubles.
The shop manual for a 79 vette is Not the same for 80 and 81 , if you have the Bat wing style rear end , the procedure that have been post will not apply .
if you go under the car you will see there is no access to the pinion nut ,, I need to do this also and the rear end needs to be dropped down to gain access
