You will see some benefit but not much until you get rid of the factory intake manifold.......it is a cork, and until the engine can breathe, most upgrades are futile.

I had an 84 with the same limited intake... Ive read it flow tests at about 500 cfm.
That said I dont see why other upgrades wouldnt wake it up at lower rpms. If I had to bet, Id guess the op have never even taken it to 5,000 rpm and is just looking for more grunt from stoplight to stoplight?
I always wanted to try porting my manifold in my 84 but I was too chicken at the time.Tried to find a second manifold to do it to but had no luck. Honestly It always ran great the whole 13 years I owned it except when the starter failed in the running position and the thermostat stuck causing it to overheat.

I didn't say the gains were non existant....just minimal....as most upgrades are geared toward flow and even a high ratio rocker will only benefit low lift flow a smidge because of the terrible .50 valves that GM used that have one cut on the and the crap assembly line valve job......nothing much happens with these heads until you lift the valve quite a bit then any benefit is negated by not getting the charge moving with low lift flow......it is minimal....like 5 horsepower......maybe.
The CFI ran great....worked on many when I was younger as no one wanted too and I always cleaned up $$$$ wise on them.......Ironically, the only one I couldn't keep running is in my garage now (82' Z/28) and I converted it to carb many years ago.......it had a plethora of compute problems and at the time I was poor, fed up, and wanted to drive my car....and my decision was made. But let me tell you something......with the 2101 Performer, 600 Holley, Curved HEI, 1.6 Comp rockers and Edelbrock headers, it ran 1.2 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile with no mods.....stock camshaft. The intake is a problem for sure. I now have an Edelbrock Q-Jet on it now and it runs even better........

I installed Comp Cams 1412-16 MAGNUM 8650 Cast Chrome Moly 1.52 Roller Tip Rockers and had to open up the push rod slots to prevent binding and I also used guide plates.
I tried to use CRANE 99768-16 polylocks but they would not fit under my stock L-82 valve covers, and I did not want to grind down the dippers to see if they would fit.
I tried to find shorty polylocks that might have fit but had no luck so I used the standard nut and yes it was harder to get them locked down.

the 82 doesnt have an l82 though right? I only mention this because the valve cover may be different. I know they were on my 83 (84) being taller .... and honestly whats a set of taller valve covers cost? I bought some nice finned aluminum ones for $60 new with plenty of clearance for my harland sharp 1.6 RRs

Oops forgot guide plates if you don't have them you needed guided rockers. I still think it's worth doing but a cam and intake would help more.
I know I'll inflame the cease fire fans but that intake flows like crap.

You could always use CORVAIR rockers arms at 1.6 like the NHRA stock class "cheaters" do................ You didn't hear me say that.. LOL
