Default SST 5 speed

Who's done it? Was it worth it? Was it hard to do?
I've got a 1975 l48 4-speed, I'm considering going this path but am unsure if it is cost effective. Any benefits that I may not have considered?

Also are these bolt-in kits?

I installed a SST Tremic TKO600 5 speed in my 68. I was in the middle of a full restoration so it was pretty routine. The most detailed portion was clocking rhe bell housing. The car with 3:73 gears is a hoot to drive around town. Get to the highway, put it in 5th and cruise at 2500 rpm with no drama. Was it worth 4k, absolutely.

Here is my thread from a couple years ago:

It wasn't bad and I love the five speed.

Best bang for the buck mod I have done on my car. Before 80 mph was 4000 rpm, now it's about 2300. Huge difference.

The SST people are great to work with and very knowledgeable. You will not regret it.

I agree !! I installed a TKO-600 in 2006. I also have 3:70 gears. Best thing I ever did to the Vette.
- I have side exhaust, the drop in noise when in 5 th is great!
- Huge improvement in fuel mileage. (Savings in fuel won't off set the price - however it might if I live to be 150 years old)

So which tranny is best? I'm not looking to increase my hp/torq too much, probably in the 400 hp/torq range.

Which is better close ratio or wide ratio? Will only be using it on the street, no racing

I put a TKO-600 in my 73 L-82. I got mine from American Powertrain and I have nothing but praise for their kit and support. The shift lever is dead on where the old one was located. I installed mine myself with no issues. So much better to cruise. I got the .82 fifth gear and am happy with it. I had also put this same model transmission in my 55 Chev. Replaced Muncie M-21 in both vehicles.

My TKO600 was the single best change I made on my car (and I made a LOT of changes).
No cutting, quite easy to do and extremely well worth it!!!

Id call them, tell them which engine you have, rear end gear, style of driving let them decide.
Any OD swap is totally worth it (cost effective) it really transforms the car and gets you more useage.

Youll forget all about the $ once you drive it, its one of those things you do cause you want to.
With 65mph speed limits and most going 10plus over you almost need one these days.
After having a 6 spd with 4.11s a 5 spd is plenty suffiicent.
