there are two belts in the picture which one squeals?
if I had to guess it would be power steering but also could be picture angle.
is this a new problem or has always done this?
We swapped another engine in and some parts had gotten lost, we got the pulleys of my buddies parts stash, I will look into the P/S pump, that is the one that's not lined up properly.
One good thing about V belts is that it doesn't hurt if they are misaligned a bit.
Per the squealing. I've found that the reason they squeal is that they are slipping, not slightly misaligned. Old, hard, belt? Too loose? Glazed, etc.?
Some times you can wipe the belts and pulleys down with acetone to remove any oil, etc.
Not sure which pulley is wrong, but they don't line up and the belt squeels.
'74? Small block 350?
What is your engine configuration? (what power accessories driven off the engine, like a/c, p/s, AIR pump, alternator)
If you have the AIM (assembly instruction manual) or someone is kind enough to look it up in theirs, you'll find all of the proper pulleys and setup. It appears to me that your alternator belt should maybe be on the next grooves out from the engine. Also, there aren't generally empty pulley grooves in the factory setups so something is missing, but without seeing the AIM, I don't have confidence in saying that definitively. Some alternators were driven off the power steering, so to be confident the AIM is going to be your go-to source.
One thing about photographing belt alignment, even a $600 lens makes things look wonky.
I do see a shiny bolt on the PS pump. The shank of the bolt indicates something is out of alignment down there. Because you used non Vette parts, I would suspect the PS mounting bracket or bolts / washers. That bolt should not have any "play" showing.
When you go to tighten the PS pump upper bolt, jam a wood pry stick between block and the PS rez for leverage. Snug upper bolt then bottom later. The wood stick will not damage the thin metal PS rez.
Thanks for all the suggestions. The original engine was long gone when I got the car, and the engine that was in it, has been blown up as well. The A/C compressor is not installed, hence the empty pulley.
Do you have the stamped steel pulley on the PS pump or the cast pulley? There are many different configurations for the pulleys
for the small block engines. I had a hard time with mine also as someone put the wrong PS pump in the car (1969). Once I got
the correct PS pump/Pulley they no longer lined up.
I had to research the correct part number pulleys for the crank, ps pump and water pump.
What a pain.
Joe
Not sure what the pulley is made of. Also, my cast iron alternator bracket blocks the P/S cap. What a pain is right! Serpentine belt is looking mighty attractive...
If the PS pulley looks like a dish rather than having spokes then it is the steel pulley. Like I said there are so many combinations
and the length of the water pump shaft play a role also.
Good luck,
Joe
OK, the cast spoke type PS pulley, when mounted on the pump is a different distance from the pump itself. My car is bundled
up still for winter or I would go out and snap a few pics for you. Pics do not always help though as I said there are many pulley
variations and unless you have access to the part numbers looks can be deceiving.

Very much so. Thanks so much Joe, I'll get 'er sorted out sooner or later...I drove her to work yesterday and ran errands around the island, even with the car not being right in so many ways, still a blast to drive!
