Default New fuel pump

Hey guys:

I have a 1969 Corvette modified for road tracks. It is a 383 /450 HP motor. It wouldn't start and I noticed the carb didn't have gas. I took off the fuel filter and still no gas when cranking.

I have one fuel filter I still have to check. However, on the hunch that I need a fuel pump, may I ask about a replacement.

The one that is in there now is the Chevy mechanical High Performance pump. I swapped out the original years ago.

Is my best option another Chevy HP mechanical pump. Or are there better alternatives?

Thanks!

Did you change out the rubber fuel hose between the hard metal line and the fuel pump recently? If so, did you buy a pre-molded 'S' shaped hose, or just replace it with common fuel line?

If you did change it and used regular fuel line, that hose is likely kinked and not passing fuel to the pump. You could keep regular fuel line there....IF you purchase a correctly sized spring line-protector to put on the outside of that line. It will straighten the kinks out so it will then work. A better choice would be to purchase an [inexpensive] 'correct' fuel line that is pre-molded to the shape needed.

If that is NOT your 'issue', wish you luck in diagnosing the problem (clogged fuel tank 'sock'; collapsed/clogged rubber hose at the fuel tank; clogged fuel line, etc, etc.)

I've used the Edelbock pump and it performed well. I had to take it apart and clock it to work with my port locations. Whatever you buy do a search on how reliable they are. The Carter pumps are all built poorly now a days. I had 3 fail because of how the pump are pivot is assembled. The pin is just swaged in and it just pulls out past the aluminum. Alot of stuff is now made in China and just isnt good quality anymore

another test, IF you pull the fuel line off the pump intake, fuel should flow freely form the tank, if not your pickup is clogged

Thanks. Edelbrock has this and I can get it local: Edelbrock Performance Fuel Pump 1721 (autozone.com)

I wanted the same High Performance Chevy pump. Not sure if they are still made or how long it would take to get.

Years ago I bought an off the shelf extreme series roller cam. My original 79 l82 mechanical pump. After the rebuild I babied my motor to break in the cam lobes.

I was driving a few hundred miles back home and my motor died out. Kinda barely running.

I changed out the pump and the same problem. The stupid pump cam lobe wore away

I think the pump is ACDelco 12355612. I looked for a rebuilding kit as everyone that sells the pump says its discontinued.

Several years ago I had a then new Chevrolet Performance fuel pump. After a few years, the engine would only produce power at minimum throttle. When I depressed the throttle, it felt like the ignition was turned off. I checked the ignition by using long test leads on my VOM to the coil, I always had ~11 VDC when the power went away, so I knew it wasn’t an ignition problem.

I removed the fuel pump and took it apart. One of the valves had come lose, and was flipped over. I put the valve in correctly, and staked it in place. Put it back together, and it’s run perfectly ever since.
